I’ve been asked a few times how I managed to travel the world with my family for most of 2019 whilst working and educating my kids…
My answer is usually “it was a dream come true”.
But I guess that doesn’t really answer the question, does it?
What I can tell you, is that if you had said to me 20 years ago I would end up traveling the world with my family whilst working and educating my kids I would have thought you were crazy!
20 years ago I felt stuck in an unhappy marriage.
20 years ago I didn’t have children and didn’t think I could have any.
20 years ago I was working in a job I couldn’t leave because it paid all the bills.
20 years ago I believed there wouldn’t be any consequences for the way I treated my body.
20 years ago I was living the life I thought I was supposed to be living.
But almost 10 years ago now, some of that had changed and I made a decision that changed it all for the better.
In a single moment I realised I was meant for more and I decided to take control and complete responsibility for my life. And it was that decision that changed my life.
Tony Robbins has a saying,
“It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.“
From that moment I have been totally committed to my own self-development. I know, that the better I understand myself, the more I increase my power to create the life I want.
So when the dream to live, work, learn and play on the road was born I knew I could make it happen.
Even though at the time I felt there were obstacles in our way (like I had a full-time office job, we didn’t have the funds, I knew nothing about educating children and we had never spent more than 3 weeks at a time away all together!?!)
I had shifted my mindset so much that I believed in my (and my husband’s) ability to figure things out.
And we did.
I left my corporate job and started not only pursuing my passion, but doing it in such a way that it was location independent. My husband and I set a goal for our finances (and although we didn’t achieve our target), when it came to making the financial commitment to the trip we knew we had enough. I researched all the various forms of ‘home schooling’ and found a method that worked perfectly for us. Most importantly, we sat down as a family designed our trip, agreed on our values, how we wanted to interact with each other and our environment and had periodic check-ins throughout the entire time.
It was a dream come true. I can honestly say there is no aspect of the trip that I didn’t love. It definitely wasn’t all ‘smooth sailing’ but we had decided how we were going to be and what we were going to do – enjoy every moment, and we did.
Looking back could we have made the dream come true earlier? Almost certainly.
I now understand myself more and know the “obstacles” I felt we had originally were only obstacles in my mind. If I were to do it again from this place, understanding who I am now, we could probably have left the month after the dream was born. However, I also understand myself enough to know that the time in between was the learning and growing I needed to truly appreciate the dream come true.
So the real answer to how I managed to travel the world with my family for most of 2019 whilst working and educating my kids is….. I decided, I committed to my self-development and we made our dream come true.
What’s your dream? What mindset shift do you need to make your dream come true?
