Achieving “success” in our careers and personal lives is often perceived as a direct path to happiness and fulfilment. However, in my experience, many professionals, especially women, find themselves grappling with dissatisfaction despite their successes. Believe it or not, a structured approach, like striving for high performance in your professional and personal life can help in achieving a balance that promotes both productivity and genuine happiness.
High performance involves consistently meeting and exceeding your own expectations (not others’) in various aspects of life, including work and personal relationships. It requires a thoughtful balance of commitment and self-care to ensure that success is sustainable and does not compromise your well-being.
Productivity is crucial in the context of high performance. It’s about prioritising and executing tasks that align with your goals and values. Effective productivity means focusing on impactful activities rather than merely trying to complete a long list of tasks—focusing on your life’s work rather than busy work. This approach helps ensure that your every effort contributes meaningfully to your objectives.
In the realm of high performance, happiness is more than a fleeting emotion; it is a vital component of sustained success. It stems from engaging deeply in meaningful activities and aligning your daily life with your overarching values and goals.
Here are some strategies for you to consider to unlock both productivity and happiness:
- Clear Goal Setting: Defining clear and exciting goals is foundational. These goals should challenge and align with your personal values to motivate sustained efforts.
- Emotional Management: Regulating your emotions effectively and maintaining a positive outlook are key to resilience and motivation. High performers often cultivate an optimistic (not unrealistic) mindset to navigate challenges smoothly.
- Physical Health: Maintaining physical health is crucial for energy and endurance in high performance settings. This includes regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and sufficient rest. And let’s face it, most settings women face at home, in the boardroom, at community events are high performance settings!
- Efficient Practices: Adopting efficient practices like time blocking and rituals like box breathing can enhance focus and effectiveness, allowing for better utilisation of time and resources.
- Relationship Building: Developing strong relationships and influencing others positively can enhance both your personal and professional life. Strong networks provide support and increase the impact of your efforts.
Achieving high performance is more about the journey than the destination. It involves a continuous process of growth, adjustment, and alignment of our actions with our personal definitions of success and happiness. By focusing on effective strategies that enhance productivity while fostering well-being, we can each enjoy a fulfilling and balanced life.
