I was so excited to write my post this week on how important it is to Master Your Physiology in order to ensure high performance*.

Physiology is the branch of biology dealing with the functions and activities of living organisms and their parts, including all physical and chemical processes.  (www.dictionary.com)  Translation for me – it is about mastering the highly complex organism that is my body to ensure high performance. So, why was I so excited?

Well for close to 2 ½ decades I have been “testing” various forms of eating plans and exercise regimes. And I’ve finally hit the jackpot!

What is it? Well, it’s not so much what it is but more the way it is. Let me explain. This may not be news for some of you but for me this was a revelation….

I finally realized that the way I need to eat, rest and exercise needs to suit me!

My husband is a private stock trader and trading educator and for years he has been teaching his students that a trading system will only work for them if it suits their personality, objectives and lifestyle.  (Since trading is such a psychological game, if the way you trade doesn’t suit you then you will inevitably find some way to sabotage it.)  So you need to design a system that suits you, test it and refine it until you’re sure the system meets your performance standards then stick to it!

Believe it or not, it was this analogy that finally led me to the realization that the way I need to eat, rest and exercise needs to suit my personality, objectives and lifestyle and then it’s not a diet and exercise regime but a way of living (system) that enables high performance!

I’m not concerned about the years I spent testing to refine my system (lol) but am more focused on the fact that the results of the system I have finally managed to design meets my performance standards.

So many diet, nutrition, exercise recommendations are touted as the “answer” (much like trading systems my husband would say) but then you adopt these recommendations (which are not your own) and it’s so very rare that you achieve the same results, or if you do they never seem to be sustainable.

Each one of our physiological makeups are so unique its no wonder that one size doesn’t fit all.  I do believe there are certain elements we need to consider e.g. rest, exercise, diet, nutrition and recharging or energizing strategies.  But how we choose to customize each element needs to suit our individual makeup.  And I’m so happy I’ve found mine!

Of course there is a disclaimer, I am not a nutritionist, nor a personal trainer or in any way educated in the study of  physiology.  What I am, is a woman on her own journey of high performance that has had a few learnings along the way 🙂
