Throughout our life journey, we often encounter various challenges that test our resilience and outlook. Amidst the hustle and bustle of our careers, especially in demanding, male-dominated industries, we can sometimes forget the importance of simple joys. One such joy is laughter. As executive women, we juggle many roles, and finding ways to uplift ourselves and those around us is crucial. Laughter isn’t just about feeling good; it’s a powerful tool for influence, resilience, and high performance. Let’s explore how embracing laughter can transform your professional and personal life.
Laughter has been scientifically proven to reduce stress, increase pain tolerance, and boost the immune system. It triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, promoting an overall sense of well-being. But beyond the physiological benefits, laughter plays a pivotal role in enhancing our social interactions and influence.
In the context of High Performance, we define influence as our ability to shape others’ beliefs and behaviours. One of the most effective ways to increase influence is through positive emotional contagion, and laughter is a key driver of this. When we laugh, we create an atmosphere of warmth and trust, making it easier to connect with and inspire those around us.
In one of my previous executive roles in corporate IT, I faced the challenge of leading a diverse team through significant organisational changes. The stress levels were high, and morale was low. I remember a particularly tense meeting where everything seemed to be going wrong. Instead of pushing harder, I shared a light-hearted anecdote about a previous project mishap that ended well despite initial chaos and my missteps. The room erupted in laughter, and the mood lightened immediately.
