Sadly, this is not uncommon. We spend so much time on the “treadmill” of life, achieving the ‘expected’ milestones that we often forget to stop and ask ourselves “Why?”
At some point, early on in life, we had obviously made the decision that achieving those milestones is what we wanted, but when did we ever revisit that decision?
What’s even more surprising is that we make decisions constantly every day and we change our minds nearly as often. But it seems those BIG decisions, those life altering ones, we make once and don’t question. And then we wonder why we run out of motivation, why we no longer feel inspired, why we hit certain ages, like 40, and have a mid-life crisis. Is it because we finally start asking questions again?
Of course it doesn’t need to be so drastic. Just like the pilot charting the course of the plane, life has a better chance of ‘arriving’ at the destination of your choosing if you are making lots and lots of course corrections along the way.
Are you really asking yourself the questions to get you to where you want to be?
Physically? Mentally? Spiritually? Relationship wise? About your career? Financially? …
And if you’re not, is there someone in your life who’s helping you do that? A friend, a partner, a mentor, or a coach?
We seem to have no trouble engaging coaches, like personal trainers, to help us physically; but don’t consider engaging a coach to help us more holistically with life.
The thing is we can all get better. And we know it. But who is really challenging us to lift our game? Who is really asking us to be better? If we’re not asking the questions of ourselves and we’re not getting help then how can we really expect to alter our course and live the life we’ve always dreamed?
In the last 6 years I have spent more time and money engaging mentors, coaches, courses and books focused on my own personal development (vs professional development) because I did start questioning again – I wanted more, I wanted to feel more alive and engaged – I had looked around me and thought is this really all there is? I was climbing the corporate ladder but I didn’t really feel fulfilled. I know that it wasn’t until I truly asked myself “What do I want?” and answered honestly, taking complete personal responsibility for the outcomes, that my life changed significantly for the better.
And now, I love my life. I am in control of my health, physically, mentally and spiritually. I have the relationships of my dreams and a mission/career that I am passionate about. My path is clear and there are many things I want to continue to achieve but without a doubt I am happy today.
People need connection and we love to be inspired and motivated, and most of all we need clarity in order to really achieve what we want – all things that my coaches have given me.
So give yourself a gift. Ask yourself the question, “What do I want?” and then get the support you need to help you course correct so you can live the life of your dreams, today!
