We’ve all been there—standing at the precipice of something new, a little anxious, perhaps a bit excited, but mostly hesitant. After all, who really enjoys being a beginner? It’s uncomfortable, humbling, and, let’s be honest, doesn’t do much for the ego. But here’s the thing:

“It is impossible to get better and look good at the same time.” ~Julia Cameron

We need to give ourselves permission to be beginners. Yes, even if it means stumbling and bumbling a bit.

The concept of a “beginner’s mindset” is more than just a cliché; it’s a powerful tool for personal and professional growth. You see when we embrace being a beginner, we allow our brains to stretch, to form new connections, and ultimately, to grow. Think of it like going to the gym for your mind. Just as lifting weights builds muscle, trying new things—especially the things we aren’t good at—builds cognitive strength.

I remember my first time delivering a keynote speech. The nerves, the sweaty palms, the overwhelming feeling of “What if I mess this up?” I had climbed corporate ladders, navigated male-dominated boardrooms, but standing in front of an audience as a *speaker*—that was a different beast altogether. But I pushed through, knowing that I had to start somewhere, even if that “somewhere” was far from polished. And you know what? I survived. Not only that, I learned, I grew, and eventually, I thrived. That’s the beauty of the beginner’s mindset.

We often avoid being beginners because it’s hard. And I get it. We’ve been conditioned to believe that if we’re not instantly good at something, it’s not worth pursuing. But here’s the kicker—avoiding the discomfort of being a beginner can actually stunt our growth. When we’re willing to experiment, to step out of our comfort zones, that’s when real magic happens.

Now, I’m not suggesting you throw yourself into something completely foreign with reckless abandon (although, if that’s your style, go for it!). But I am suggesting that you open yourself up to new experiences, even if they make you feel a little foolish at first. After all, as adults, how often do we get the chance to truly be beginners again?

So, as you go about your day, consider this: What’s one new thing you can try? Something that pushes you just enough out of your comfort zone that you might stumble, maybe even fall. But remember, it’s in that stumbling that you find your footing. It’s in those moments of uncertainty that you grow stronger, more resilient, and yes, more capable.

Embrace the beginner’s mindset. It’s not about perfection; it’s about progress. And sometimes, the most significant progress comes from simply allowing ourselves to begin.

If this has been useful for you I’d love you to share it with your friends or anyone else you think may find it useful.

Remember, you can unleash your unique version of success!
