During my corporate career I reached a stage where it was clear I wasn’t going to advance further by relying on the skills and capabilities that had got me there. The new playing field I wanted to enter required a different perspective, a new way of thinking and a set of skills and capabilities that weren’t as tangible as I was used to.

But of course that doesn’t just happen in the corporate environment. When we first become parents, start a new business, enter a new relationship or our circumstances change in some way we find ourselves ‘stuck’… often we can get ‘unstuck’ by leaning on someone else.

For many (and I include myself in this), “coaching” was always the prerogative of sports; especially ‘elite’ or ‘high performance’ coaching. In the corporate context, labels like mentor, role-model, advocate or sponsor, were ones I could relate to. However, I also used to think only those who were ‘worthy’ or tagged for advancement were provided this type of support. So of course I worked my proverbial behind off to be considered special enough to be gifted with this opportunity for help.

What I didn’t know at the time was that it was my feeling of unworthiness that was getting in the way of me receiving help. Because I didn’t expect support, I didn’t see the help available to me, either through my employer or other avenues. We tend to get what we expect and we tend to get what we think we’re worthy of.

So how do you change the story and start feeling worthy of support so you can ask for it and / or embrace it when it shows up?

One way is to remind yourself that being open to and receiving help doesn’t make you any less capable.

In fact, seeking help or finding that guide who can support you in your new playing field is what true high performers do, just like elite athletes. They don’t wait. They don’t work harder. They find a way to shortcut and accelerate their learning so they can explode their potential sooner.

If you’re ‘waiting’ for someone to notice you, or ‘waiting’ to reach the next level, or just ‘waiting’ to be ready – STOP!

If you’re worthy of being granted the gift of life, you’re worthy of being supported.

It’s up to you to decide who is supporting you and take action to make it happen.
