EFFORT is a word that gets used a lot in our day-to-day vocabulary and I hear it consistently in my coaching sessions.

“It’s too much effort!”

“That takes effort…”

“Won’t that take a lot of effort?”

The word also seems to spark a lot of feeling, a feeling of exhaustion or a feeling of drag or particularly a feeling of energy drain.

But something I’ve learned is that we really only use the word effort when we lack NECESSITY.

What do I mean by that?

Take a moment to think of something you absolutely love doing….

For me, it’s reading.

There is no way I would ever refer to reading as it takes effort because I love it.  It’s something I enjoy doing. I have the motivation for it.  And in fact, it is NECESSARY for me to relax.  (I always read at least 10 minutes before going to sleep!

Now think of something you do but you think it takes effort.

For me, it used to be cooking.

I didn’t like it, in fact, I didn’t think I could do it and just the thought of it would make me feel completely and utterly exhausted, and I’d have to drag myself to “muster up the energy” to do it.  I had no motivation for it and of course, it wasn’t necessary because my husband could do it!

But interestingly when I retired from my corporate career my husband and I had a discussion and I agreed that I would take over the cooking role because it was necessary for him to be able to focus more time on his business – so I  began to shift my perspective.

I learned how to cook because it was necessary for me to contribute to the household in a different way.  I started to enjoy cooking because it became necessary to me to be able to show my love for my family in feeding them healthily and well.  And funnily enough, cooking no longer feels like it requires the effort that it used to!

What do you consider takes EFFORT in your life?  When do you feel too much EFFORT is involved?

Take some time to think about why it is NECESSARY ….

Shift your perspective until the necessity is high and the feeling of effort dissipates.

Or alternatively, if it’s not necessary consider whether you should be dropping it altogether.

The less effort you feel things take, the more energy you will feel you have and the more engaged, confident and joyful you will feel 🙂
