For the past couple of weeks my husband has been away and I have been home with our children. And that’s a little different for us, usually I’m the one that’s away and he’s home!
I’ve absolutely loved the time with my kids, and so the sobering thought for me was how much time and opportunity have I missed as a parent to shape and influence the people they are developing into.
My husband has done a stellar job, but what about my contribution? As a parent my message to my children has consistently been ‘I love you and my purpose is to ensure you’re safe, happy and healthy’.
But how much have I influenced that?
Influence is a tricky concept and one I believe we need to work at consciously to achieve a positive outcome.
So I considered my influence from the perspective Brendon Burchard suggests:
Influential people
“teach us how to think”,
they “challenge us”, and
also “role model the way”
As a parent, a leader, a colleague, a team mate, a daughter, sibling and a friend I do believe in providing others with my perspective. I believe in sharing with them or teaching them any knowledge that I have learned that may help improve their work, career or finances, their health be it mental, physical or spiritual; or their relationships.
I also actively challenge not only myself but others around me to learn as much as they can to grow and develop themselves into the best person they can be.
I consider it an honor that others may consider me a role model… but I believe my greatest success will be that one day my children are a positive influence in their own right.
Like with all aspects of high performance*, influence is not easy. But there are certainly ways to learn how to consciously, actively and positively influence every interaction you have with others and ultimately “level up”!
