We’re coming to the end of our first month in self-isolation. And I don’t know about you but I know staying motivated can be somewhat of a challenge, particularly in this current environment.
It’s even more difficult, when you really want the goal you’re aiming for… and yet you’re struggling to find the energy to actually do any work towards it.
Motivation is like a muscle, it needs regular exercise to maintain it, otherwise it gets saggy and tired. Use these 10 tips to help maintain your motivation levels… and increase your productivity too!
#1: Focus on your WHY
Before you even commit to a goal, know WHY you actually want to do something. Your Why serves as the cornerstone of your motivation. Your Why is something that is driving you that will be worth the struggle and the journey. Your Why is usually something bigger than just yourself and the reason you are willing to go after it is significantly important to you.
#2: Write Down Your Goal(s) and Visualise Your End Result(s)
Every human achievement started as a thought first. When you write your goals down, something special happens as it moves from the metaphysical (thought) to the physical (on paper). It helps to change the idea into an action; the thought into a desire and it helps make it factual and achievable, and increases your motivation towards achieving it. Don’t worry about how you are going to achieve it – focus on and visualise the end result you want to achieve.
#3: Commit Publicly
When you share your goal with your family, friends and the world at large, you‘re not only committing to your dream, you’re asking for support and strengthening your desire to reach the end result.
#4: Engage Your Physical State
Now you have your mind and emotions focused on your goal, next is to get your body focused. Music can enhance your emotions and get your body moving and fill you with energy. Creating a verbal statement that you voice out loud reinforces your desire and helps get you through difficult times e.g. “I can do this” and “I’ve got this covered”. Use a ritual to signify you’re ready like using the same pen, wearing a certain outfit etc. Each of these routines gets your body to tell your mind it’s time for your motivation, energy and creativity to appear.
#5: Set Up Your Environment for Success
A cluttered, untidy working environment can really cause your motivation to sag – get cleaning and ensure you have reminders in your work space about your WHY like a vision board; decluttering can be a really cathartic experience for your motivation.
#6: Challenge Yourself
Keep growing and striving. Learn new things, stretch that comfort zone to challenge yourself to go further.
#7: Revisit Your Achievements
Remind yourself of those things you’ve previously achieved and succeeded at. Reinforcing past success is a great way to renew your motivation and energy.
#8: Celebrate and Reward Yourself
Whether you’ve reached a small milestone or achieved a great leap forward – anchor in your success both mentally and physically by celebrating and rewarding each and every achievement.
#9: Go Outside
Fresh air is great for blowing away the mental cobwebs and physically re-energising – go for a walk, run or just sit in the garden and spend time appreciating nature.
#10: Rest
If all else fails, draw a line under the day and get an early night. Get a good night’s sleep and make the decision to have a fresh start in the morning.
And remember above all, your motivation is up to you – to protect and fuel your motivation you need to create the right attitude and environment both of which are in your control!
